How To Order Hair Extensions

How To Order Hair Extensions

Have you tried to order hair extensions, and were left scratching your head?  Hair extensions are not fabricated in the United States, therefore, they are sold by the gram (metric system).  The length & width is offered in inches.  The amount of hair necessary will vary from person to person based on hair length, density, and desired outcome. It is important to understand how hair extensions are sold whether purchasing on your own or applying at a salon.  The below breakdown is based on a full set of hair extensions which gives both volume and length.

Choosing your hair extensions

While it might seem obvious, having the right amount of hair extensions goes a long way in having the quality result you are looking for.  In keeping with the color/hue of the hair, mixing batches/brands is not advisable, therefore understanding how much you need is important before you begin the process of ordering.  The goal is to get what you need from the same vendor, batch, and brand.

How much do you need?

Below we cover how the hair extensions are packaged, bundled, and what an average client might need.  If you are unsure, feel free to reach out to us and we are happy to help you figure out both the method and amounts.  Below are just guidelines of industry standards and averages that give you a better understanding on how to go about your ordering.

Hair Extension Methods

Hand-Tied Hair Extensions

Note: The gram weight will slightly vary by length.

The average hand-tied track is 22 grams in weight and spans from ear to ear.  Hand-tied tracks can be stacked on top of one another, they are applied in rows throughout the head.  The average client, desiring both length and volume, will need 3 to 4 rows and 2 tracks per row.

Machine Sewn Tracks

Machine sewn hair is sold by the bundle with an average weight of 100 grams or 4 ounces of hair.  The average full set ranges from 100 to 200 grams or 1 to 2 bundles. Many salons stock 4-ounce bags of machine-sewn hair extensions.

Tape Hair Extensions

Tape hair is sold per piece or 2 pieces (considered a sandwich).  Tape hair can be purchased from 1" to 2.25" width in a variety of lengths.  The average person requires 20 to 40 sandwiches or 100 to 200 grams. Tape hair can be cut into smaller widths, some hair suppliers offer them in smaller width sizes.

Veila Pull-Thru Hair Extensions

Pull-Thru Hair Extensions are sold by a 50-gram pack consisting of (3) large pieces of 2.75" width and (4) small pieces of 1.25" width.  Based on the above requirements, you may need 2 to 4 packs of Veila hair to achieve both volume and length.

Keratin Hair Extensions & I-Tip Hair Extensions

Individual strand hair extensions, whether keratin or I-tip,  range in weight from .5 gram to 1 gram per strand.  Some vendors offer .25 grams and 1..50 grams.  The average person desiring both volume and length uses 100 to 200 strands at 1 gram per strand. Keratin Hair extensions can be split in half which helps to hide in fine hair or fine areas of the head.  Manufacturers' packaging varies from 20, 50, or 100 piece packs.

The above is a general rule of thumb when ordering hair extensions, there are cases where weight, packing, and amounts may vary.  This knowledge will help whether ordering online or working with a hair salon.

The weight and amount of hair purchased will impact the price, which is self-explanatory.  Purchasing high-grade hair extensions such as 100% Remy human hair or virgin (one donor hair) is highly recommended since most of the above applications allow for the hair to be re-used.

  • I was trying to figure out how much hair I purchased for a full set of 22 in extensions if I only have one row put in? It’s been 4 months and I’ve lost between 2-4 inches in length. I maintain the hair and am due for a move up, but what caused this I’m not sure. Please help me figure this out.
