Add Highlights With Hair Extensions
Hair color indecisiveness often leads to breakage and chemical damage, I, myself, have changed my hair color so many times that my hair has broken off! One would think that as a hair colorist I would know better than to bleach, dye, and re-bleach, but I have and I am grateful for hair extensions. Once hair is damaged, it needs to be left alone to grow and recover, no chemicals should be added other than a semi-permanent color gloss. But we are human, and scrolling through Instagram will often inspire us to change our color, often requiring highlights which are done with a high-lift/high-ammonia hair color or hair bleach. It may be obvious that we need to give our hair a holiday from lightning, but the pictures on Instagram are so gorgeous. This is the time to stop, reevaluate either leave our hair alone or opt. for the only way to add healthy highlights which are using hair extensions.
Recently, a bride-to-be with some damaged hair decided she needed to fix her hair color, she was tired of the muddled shades in her hair. Diane, her hairstylist, knew it was too soon to color and highlight her hair, so she showed her hair extension color options that would add natural-looking highlights. She chose to use individual strand hair extensions, which tend to flow the most naturally, in a few shades of color.
When choosing a hair extension color it is important to have a shade that contains the client's base color, in this case, the client's base was a medium warm brown (color #4). Our Veila keratin bonded hair extensions are multi-tonal, the hair extension strands had warm brown, caramel with a bit of soft blonde. If we added one extension in warm brown, and one in blonde her color would look stripy and unnatural. Multi-toned hair extensions offer a blend that emulates highlighted or balayage hair color. Some of our extensions have a dark root which transitions into lighter ends similar to the hand-painted balayage color technique.
The bride-to-be wanted to add highlights to her hair's natural length but then decided to go for longer hair. The beauty of hair extensions is that they hold a much better curl set than natural hair and we can create waves from beachy to finger waves. At the end of the application, her extensions were blended perfectly with her own hair by using a feather razor technique that skims the ends of the hair extensions, not her hair.
We train each client as to how to style and maintain their new hair, and they receive a full set of maintenance instructions, products, and a free two-week check-in. No one leaves our salon without us styling their new hair. Our client chose a curl set similar to the one that she wants for her big day! Many hairstylists are familiar with hair extensions, but not all methods, it is important for her stylist to not curl iron too close to the keratin bond since she can melt it. There is other advice we can give, so an open line of communication between our salon and her bridal hairstylist is key.
Brides are not the only clients that benefit from adding hair extensions in place of coloring, I have worked with many clients with over-processed hair and I chose different methods of hair extensions to suit their own individual hair needs. Shorter-haired clients may benefit from hair extensions that add more volume such as; Veila pull-thru or hand-tied hair extensions.
A recent bride had traction alopecia around the perimeter of her hair, in this scenario, we added a hair topper with a high hair density in eighteen-inch length. A hair topper allows for more hair coverage at the top of the head and high-quality human hair can also be worn up in a bridal style. This particular bride chose to have us style her hair for her wedding day since hair toppers require more attention to avoid damage. We will carefully add bouncy waves, integrate her own hair into the hair topper and place her tiara and veil.
