Reverse Hair Extension Application

Reverse Application Of Keratin Micro Bonds

Have you had hair extensions that look like a mullet? Most likely it is because there is not enough hair attached to the crown and sides. We have many clients with voluminous hair at the top of the head, and most hair extension experts are avoiding this area, and sometimes rightfully so. If you have lots of hair at the top of the head, then your hair extensions should be applied in reverse order. Hair stylists are trained to apply for hair extensions from above the nape of the neck and up to the crown, this application works well for most, but not for heavy hair.

Customizing hair extensions to your client's individual needs is crucial in creating a proper blend between their own hair and hair extensions. It is easy to work with thick hair since the hair follicles are dense and strong, but how about clients with fine hair that is abundant? My advice is to use the reverse application method, but using lightweight, small in size, micro keratin bonds. I prefer using micro bonds instead of sew-in wefts because each bond is customized to the individual's hair follicle strength. Each bond is custom-cut to create an undetectable look while filling in the hair.

I start at the crown, I leave enough hair out of the hair extensions to cover the micro bonds (nano tips). I apply as many rows to fill in the hair, generally 4 rows, I then apply hair extensions to the sides of the head, working my way down. As I work my way down the head, applying for keratin fusion hair extensions, I can enlarge the size based on my client's hair follicle strength. I may opt to use full-size k-tips to create a strong weight line at the bottom of the hair. This technique will ensure that I am not adding too much weight or stress to my client's own hair.

The application process may look easy, but it is not, you can create lots of damage to a client's hair if the extensions are not properly placed. The damage can lead to hair loss. I once had a client that had her boyfriend watch me apply for hair extensions, and he guaranteed that he could apply for her extensions. Wow, what a mess, the keratin bonds were not sealed, the sections were all over the place, and her head was in pain. She will never make that mistake again!

In Conclusion, it is essential to have your extensions applied by a well-seasoned, licensed professional. Some stylists specialize in hair extensions, and they are the best option.

If you have had extensions that look like a "mullet" hairstyle, recommend that your stylist use the reverse application technique. We offer training via VeilaHairExtensions.com, either in person or via Zoom. I prefer in-person training, but I realize that not everyone can travel to our classes.

Keratin hair extensions are sold pre-bonded or can be custom-made. Pre-bonded hair extensions tend to have a stronger attachment, whereas custom-made keratin bonds are slightly weaker, and require more attention.

This simple technique will ensure you do not run out of hair extensions since you covered the most important areas of the head. There are no surprises, both the client and stylists know exactly what the end result will look like, and it is a foolproof technique for a novice in the hair extension industry.

If a client has lots of fine hair, I suggest creating lots of layers to avoid tension that can lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is hair loss due to undue stress on the hair follicles. Layered hairstyles are in fashion this season, and will help to ease tension. Hair extensions are not cut in a conventional way, we use either a slide technique with cutting shears or a feather razor to create subtle layers.

Practice makes perfect when cutting layers into hair extensions, and I try to avoid razoring my clients' own hair. Practice on a mannequin before layering hair extensions on a real client. Once the extensions are cut, you are stuck with the look unless they are removed and reapplied. When I first started in the hair extension industry, I asked for models that I could practice on. You will have to outlay for the cost of the hair, but you will learn something new with each hair extension application.
