There are many reasons for the necessity of a wig for a child; some for medical reasons such as alopecia, trichotillomania, and others for gender identity. Some hair loss causes do not require a wig and can be addressed with a hair topper, hair patch, or possibly hair extensions.

Synthetic vs. Human Hair Wig

For a child under 13, I would recommend a synthetic wig of high quality. These wigs are light in weight and quite comfortable. A human wig tends to be heavier and requires more maintenance, ie, shampooing, conditioning, blow drying, and styling.

A heat-resistant synthetic fiber wig does not need to be washed as often, and we have a wig-reviving spray that helps to clean the inside and outside of the wig. You can wash the wig with synthetic fiber shampoo/conditioner, and use a leave-in product before drying. Since the synthetic wig is already formed to a style, it is best to allow it to air dry on a wig stand.

A synthetic wig that is heat resistant will keep its style, and you can add low-heat curls or even straighten it.  

A human wig works better for pre-teen and teenagers since they tend to work well with hair, and may opt for a natural look. We stock wigs for total hair loss due to Alopecia, Lupus, and Chemotherapy treatment. It will take some extra effort to cut in a style for this wig, and we offer a quick class to help in washing, blow drying, and styling. Children with medical hair loss often receive full insurance coverage for their wig, hair topper, or prosthetic.

We stock comfortable wig caps that are not rough on sensitive scalps and will customize the wigs to look natural. Lace front wigs tend to have the most natural-looking hairline, if you order a wig online, you will most likely need some blending, coloring, and cap customization.

Some children with Alopecia or Trichotillomania, tend to have sporadic areas of bald spots at the top of the head or nape of the neck. In this case, we work with hair toppers and human hair patches.  

A hair topper can be attached with clips, or with our exclusive application method that does not use tape, glue, or sewing. Our goal is to keep hair healthy, and not cause any further damage to the hair follicles.

A hair patch works especially well on areas of hair loss, or balding, where most of the hair is present. We custom create a human hair patch that covers the hair loss area, and blends naturally into existing hair.  

We have many young boys with hair loss due to alopecia areata, we affix the hair patch to the nape of the neck or top of the head. It is difficult to simply shave one's hair since missing hair follicles are visible. It is heartbreaking for these youngsters with hair loss since other children tend to comment on their hair and make them feel very uncomfortable.

Younger people in transition from male to female tend to seek a more feminine hairstyle, in many cases, a simple haircut can do the trick! Some of our clients decide to wear a wig until their own hair grows longer, but use a wig or hair topper in the meantime.  

If our client has four inches of their own hair, our hair extension methods will quickly create a longer hairstyle. Hair extensions only work on those with their own hair that covers the attachment.
