Are Hair Peptides Good For Hair Extensions?

In my research, products containing hair peptides such as K-18 are not recommended for hair extensions, this does not apply to virgin unprocessed hair,  but it does apply to virgin (one donor hair), and Remy hair extensions.  Peptide products for hair, not scalp, active ingredients are mostly made of water,  Denatured Alcohol,  Behentrimonium Chloride which is sodium-based and drying to the hair, Ethers which help the product to spread, Polysorbate which prevents static.  Sh-Oligopeptide-78 is midway on the list of ingredients It contains a maximum of 123 amino acids which "may" contain disulfide bonds, but the primary purpose is to "enhance" the appearance of hair,  and Polysorbate 20 which prevents the product from clumping.  The last part of the list of ingredients is wheat protein, sugar alcohol,  fragrance, and product stabilizers.  Once hair grows from the scalp, it is no longer living, therefore hair peptide products may only help the appearance of the hair, but will never truly repair it.  There is no product that repairs split ends, the only cure for split ends is trimming them, they should be trimmed since they will continue to split.

Why Hair Peptides Are Not Recommended For Hair Extensions?

When extensions are processed at hair factories, the raw material is decolorized (keeping the cuticle intact) the hair is then flooded with keratin proteins and silicones to seal the hair.  The use of the above-mentioned peptide product will only lead to hard feeling hair (dry and tangled), not supple and soft.  We do not recommend using products containing hydrolyzed wheat or other proteins on hair extensions.

It is best to avoid the current products labeled as "peptides." Skincare peptides react differently and may actually help with wrinkles and skin issues.

Hair Peptides On Natural Hair

Products made for hair loss are different from the above, they are serums that contain water, castor oil, and caffeine such as; The Oridinary and Vegamour.  These products are oils that are massaged into the scalp for up to 4 months.  The jury is out on their effectiveness, they are quite pricey and if you research hair massage oil recipes, you can create your own.

In my opinion, the act of massaging the head will lead to increased blood flow to the hair follicles which ultimately produces hair growth.  Hair growth will only occur on stagnant hair follicles, not ones that are no longer alive due to scarring alopecia and pattern balding.

In Conclusion

Peptides are strings of amino acids and the precursor to protein, hair is made of protein, peptides are small enough to penetrate the hair shaft,  and the concept is very exciting.  I am waiting for technology to create the "perfect peptide product." As of now, I am not confident about what is on the market.  I am seeking "botanical products," containing natural ingredients.

I am keeping my eye on "Virtue Density Booster," which contains four amino acid peptides, and red clover extracts that promise to combat hair loss.  I will give an update once I test the product on myself and clients that agree to participate.
