Feather Hair Extensions Yes Or No?
In the mid-2000's feather hair extensions were all the rage when it comes to hairstyles! Many celebrities, including one of my clients Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame, were wearing the plumage along with custom-made grizzly painted hair extensions. The look was quite Bohemian as the resurgence of 1970's fashion immerged on the fashion scene. The feather "Boho" extensions are predicted to hit the fashion scene in spring 2022, similarly to hair tinsel this past holiday season. Many hair influencers on Instagram are donning hair feathers, a few posts from these heavy hitters can create an immediate fashion trend.

The feathers are popular amongst Flytying (fishing) enthusiasts and are genetically bred for their plumage. Exotic birds are bred for their iridescent and bright-colored feathers. The Grizzly colored plumage, thin from top to bottom tends to be the most popular. In general, the feathers range from two to 8 inches varying in shape and size. Many wearers love them because they can be treated like real hair; washed, dried, and curled.
During the height of the fashion trend, rooster farms were back-ordered, they did not realize how popular the demand for feathers would be. As quickly as the trend became, it fizzled out just as fast. In the fall of 2011, the UPC contacted Whiting Farms (the largest plumage supplier from Colorado) to stop the cruel gassing of roosters for their plumage. They even started a petition to Steven Tyler, to stop wearing and promoting the feathers braided into his hair. I suggested that Tyler use hair extensions to create a similar grizzly look by painting hair extensions with cool colors to emulate the feathers.
The Best Option
Due to the shortage and cruelty of gassing roosters and exotic birds, manufacturers created synthetic feathers! Synthetic feathers offer the same look and colors without harming the birds along with a less expensive price tag!
The Differences Between Real Feathers And Synthetic Feathers
Like natural hair, real feathers can be washed, styled, and curled. Synthetic feathers do not offer the same styling features, but you may be surprised by the array of colors they are offered in. You can switch up colors more often and they are very resilient. Synthetic feathers can look very genuine.
How To Attach
For those who want longevity; feathers can be attached along with hair extensions, micro-links, or keratin adhesive. If you prefer to take them on and off, then clip-on hair feathers may be for you. We can be more creative at the salon, I tend to separate the feathers and place them in peek-a-boo areas under bangs or an overall placement throughout the head.
Many of the Etsy suppliers are stocking real feathers in the event this fashion statement takes off. If you want to be ahead of the trend, you may want to invest in the feathers now.
My preference will be to use high-end synthetic feathers that offer heat resistance, this will allow a client to blow dry hair, but I do not recommend flat/curl irons.
