Can you relax your hair while wearing hair extensions?

Can you relax your hair while wearing hair extensions?

The short answer is "yes!" But, it depends on the hair extension method, and type of hair relaxer. In general all types of hair extensions can withstand relaxing, But I would not suggest relaxing over tape hair extensions. Sodium Hydroxide based relaxers can be used while wearing hair extensions, but you must proceed with caution. It is best to only relax the hair left out of the hair extensions, and protect the rest of hair with a plastic cap, surrounded with plastic wrap. Sodium hydroxide is the strongest relaxer, and may cause damage not only to your own hair, but especially hair extensions. It is best to remove hair extension prior to using a hair relaxer, but with the proper precautions, you can still relax your hair

Japanese Straightening is a permanent relaxing system with an active ingredient; ammonium thioglycolate, which is found in permanent waving. Once again, I prefer to remove hair extensions prior to the service, but the hair extensions can be protected as above. The main issue with Japanese Straightening, is the use of thermal heat. It is imperative the a flat iron passes over the natural hair several times, and the heat can break-down keratin bonds. It is for this reason, that I advice using caution when doing a Japanese Straightener.

The safest method of hair straightening while wearing extensions is a keratin treatment. We have great success with the Brazilian Blowout brand, we use a dry shampoo to protect the hair extension attachment area; keratin bonds, weft hair, tape hair extensions, pull-thru, and beaded micro links. In some cases, we use the treatment on the hair extensions too. In this case, I would recommend only using the treatment on Indian virgin temple hair, but the treatment does work on hair extensions.

As with any chemical service; it is best to perform a strand test prior to using any type of relaxer, even a keratin treatment. Hair extensions (other than virgin Indian temple hair) derive from a dark hair source, and are chemically treated to achieve a variety of hair extension colors.

It is best to work with raw hair (unprocessed) when straightening, and there are many benefits. Our temple hair is completely unprocessed, and will accept chemical treatments and color like virgin unprocessed hair.

It is defined as hair that has NOT been altered by steam or chemical processing in any way. Raw Hair is the most natural, pure, and 100% authentic hair in the market today.

Since it is simply the highest quality hair extensions that can be found. Raw Hair is not only natural looking, but it acts just like your own natural hair and it blends well with all hair types.

It is important to ask for a consultation before working with relaxing chemicals, and be sure to ask a lot of question of your stylist. Proper vetting is key.
