"You made me a hair extension addict!" my client testified. A few years back she received her first application of Keratin, strand by strand hair extensions. Her goal was to keep them for a year until her own hair grew longer, and was less distressed. Her hair was quite damaged, dry, and too short for her. Upon evaluating her hair, I suggested that she have a "Brazilian Blowout" keratin treatment to calm her frizzy hair and infuse protein into her damaged locks. She was definitely afraid of the treatment since she did not want to damage her hair further. I explained how the system worked, showed pictures of beautiful end results, and told her to think about it. She decided she wanted to go for both a keratin treatment and hair extensions, again, insisting no more than a year of wearing hair extensions. After completing the process she was amazed, we took before and after photos for her and scheduled her free two-week check-in.
At her check-in appointment, she told me that her husband thought her hair was too long, so I cut a few inches off. Keratin hair extensions last up to 5/6 months, therefore, I left her next visit up to her. I was convinced that she was only going to wear hair extensions one time and that I would be removing them at her next visit.
Five months to the day, she returned to the salon for removal. At this time, she felt she was ready to remove her extensions. After removing them, I saw a look of sadness take over her expression. She said she felt "naked" and I asked if I could put them back in. I told her to give herself a week without extensions just to be sure another set was really what she wanted. The next day she called and pleaded for me to apply them again. We took another photo of her hair to track her growth progress, her hair grew approximately two inches, she was quite surprised since she heard that hair extensions could possibly damage her own hair. I explained that properly applied and well-maintained hair extensions do not cause damage. She followed all the instructions I gave and her hair was looking healthier than her first appointment.
Hair extensions do receive a bad reputation because hairstylists do not explain at-home care. Also, consulting as to which extensions work best for someone's own hair is essential. Often, less is more, it is important to evaluate an individual's hair follicle strength before adding extensions. Keratin bonded hair extensions should be placed a bit away from the scalp to avoid tension and adding less extension to weak hair areas is essential. It has been quite a few years, and my lovely client has not gone a day without her hair extensions. At each visit we evaluate her hair, take pictures and ensure her own hair is growing healthy. Her own hair has grown significantly and we only add hair extensions for volume. The cost of her hair extensions has dropped in half since we do not need as many. Her removal and re-application are on a four-month basis, the cost is budgeted into her finances, and she now has the hair she always wanted.
Do hair extensions become addictive? For some, just like eyelash extensions, but we like to consider them a healthy "addiction!" As for her husband, he loves her look, and the fact that the hair extensions have considerably decreased in price.
