How To Wash Fine Hair With Hair Extensions

Washing fine, hair with hair extensions takes a bit more work than those with medium to thicker hair. Fine hair accumulates oil quicker since the oil does not get absorbed at the scalp. It is important to not only properly wash your own hair but to remove oil from the hair extension attachment. Oil either natural or applied breaks down the hair extensions, and diminishes their longevity. The advice I will give is for the scalp and hair extension attachment, and not recommended for the actual hair extensions.

Do a dry shampoo, no not the spray-on kind, while your hair is dry with a clarifying or a clear color shampoo. Gently move the shampoo on the scalp and hair extension attachment careful to not apply it to the rest of the hair extensions. You can use a moisturizing shampoo for the extensions. Wet the hair, add more clarifying shampoo to the wet hair, massage gently, and rinse. It takes two shampoos to carefully remove grease and oils.

Towel dry your hair, and use your preferred conditioner away from your scalp. Conditioner is meant for the hair, not the scalp. In fact, conditioner can clog the hair follicle. Use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair extensions, and rinse thoroughly. I mean thoroughly do not leave any residue on your scalp. You can use a leave-in conditioner on the hair extensions from mid-shaft to ends of the hair, blow-dry, and style.

You will find that using this technique may allow you to shampoo less. Keep in mind, the fewer products added to the hair, the cleaner it will remain. I will often skip a leave-in product since it weighs down the hair.

Proper shampooing will keep your own hair healthy and shiny, as well as hair extensions. Fine hair can be washed every other day, but I do not recommend daily washing. This clarifying shampoo technique is best used once per week but can vary based on your own oil production. You may only need to clarify once a month and/or every other week. This technique will work well on fine hair without hair extensions too.

Dry shampoo is fine for days that you miss a shampoo, but it can clog the hair follicles -- limit the use.

Proper at-home extension hair care is paramount in keeping your hair and hair extensions healthy. Watch the below Youtube short for a full description. Comment below if we can offer further advice
