How to work with very coiled curly hair

There are a myriad of curl textures, and embracing your texture is key. But what if you have a hard time dealing with very coiled curly hair, there are treatments that are safe, will make it easy to work with your hair. Also, there are lots of moms with children that do not have the same texture hair, this can make it difficult to work with their child's hair, we have options for them as well.  

Below is a graph of hair textures, not everyone falls into one category, and may have a mix. 

The last 4 curl patterns tend to present a challenge to some; very curly, coiled, very coiled, and zig-zag coiled. I am an advocate of working with your natural hair, but I am also well versed on what is safe to make hair more manageable. I will give the brands we work with so you can ask us, or your stylist for these hair systems.

Very Curly & Coiled Hair Texture

A keratin treatment, made by Brazilian Blowout will subtly relax your curl, as well as de-frizzing your hair. Brazilian Blowout is not a permanent treatment, it lasts in the hair for approximately three to four months. The Brazilian Blowout brand is a tried and true treatment that we have used for years. This smoothing treatment infuses a protein coating around each hair strand, without changing the bond structure of the hair. It is a buildable treatment, and hair is silkier with every application. It does not contain formaldehyde, and your hair will still have wave but will be easier to manage, blow dry, and style. The protein will keep hair strands healthy and can be used in conjunction with hair color, and bleach.

Very Coiled & Zig-Zag Coiled Hair Texture

Texturizing Curls

Texturizing curls is a quick treatment that subtly reconstructs hair bonds by changing the hair bonds. We do not use texturizing to straighten hair, we only use this treatment to tame very coiled hair. The best product for this is Revlon Realistic No Base Mild Treatment. I do not recommend that you use this product at home, since processing time may vary, and our professionals will strand text every minute while processing.  

texturizing is a quick process, and the end result is more manageable, perfect curls. We only use the "mild" version, and this product does contain sodium hydroxide, therefore it is important to leave it on the hair for a few minutes. You can not combine other types of hair straightening systems with these products, or hair color with henna.

We recently had a mom bring her young teen into our salon with a zig-zag coiled texture, his heart was set on having a mop haircut, we subtly controlled his curl with Revlon Realistic Mild Relaxer, and he was jumping for joy.

Japanese Hair Straightening

This is a permanent treatment that renders hair completely straight. This is for those with all types of curls, looking for easy-to-manage straight hair. We use the CHI Transformation System, which changes the structure of the hair bonds and then uses thermal heat to completely straighten hair. The active ingredient is ammonium thio, which has been used in curly hair perms for decades. This improved version infuses silk protein, and pearl to strengthen the hair. It is offered in three formulas; resistant, color treated, and chemically treated.  

The process is quite involved and must be performed precisely to the instructions. The average process takes 3 to 5 hours, and we strongly suggest using their at-home care.

This is a much healthier straightening system compared to its counterpart containing sodium hydroxide. The average person retouches their curly regrowth three times per year.

Hair relaxers have been deemed damaging to one's health, but the CHI transformation system is completely different from traditional hair relaxers.

The above processes should be done by a salon professional, and we will assist in at-home care. Processing hair too often is discouraged, and check-ins are available for those who need help styling.
