August Hair Loss Awareness Month In Boston

August Hair Loss Awareness Month In Boston

Hair loss affects over 56 million adults in the United States, there are so many reasons for hair loss; medical issues, weight loss, hormonal, genetic alopecia, trichotillomania, and chemotherapy. Over my twenty-year tenure working with hair loss, I have personally witnessed more people suffering from it. Shedding light hair loss will increase studies to help the medical community do more research!

I have worked with many women that have had hair transplantation, only to find they have huge scars where the donor's hair is extracted and very little progress with growing new hair. Surgery can often be a money-making machine, which saddens me, since most women are in my chair seeking scalp prosthetics, aka hair toppers. Red light therapy caps and supplements support hair growth but are not the answer as a stand-alone treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma tends to work only if hair follicles are dormant, but if the hair follicles are not alive, it will do absolutely nothing. In fact, you can achieve similar results with daily head massage, and save money. The jury is still out on exosomes, which are plant-derived stem cells, instead of using your own blood, the exosomes are supposedly more powerful in waking dormant hair follicles.

I do cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to benefit from "cold capping," the procedure does maintain a good portion of the hair. But it has its limitations since many patients lose key areas of the hair, such as the top of the head.

Science has not yet determined the best way to help with hair loss due to Trichotillomania, a hair-pulling condition, medications, therapy, and behavioral reversal seem to help, but are not fool proof.

Alopecia is a blanket statement for hair loss. Alopecia can be spotty (alopecia areata), diffuse hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), lupus and other autoimmune disorders, and other genetic conditions. Scarring alopecia, lichen planopilaris, is scary, there is no way to grow back hair once hair loss is present, and the scalp is inflamed.

There are many diseases and conditions that lead to hair loss, but we need to raise awareness. Hair loss can be debilitating and further research is necessary.

At Noelle Salon, we work with a variety of scalp prostheses from a myriad of hair toppers, aka hair systems, hair restoration. They are offered in a variety of sizes, lengths, and cap construction. We also have invisible hair extensions which fill in hair loss areas; this system is best for diffuse hair loss since the attachment points are not visible.

With Alopecia Areata, fungal infections, other autoimmune diseases, thinning hair by Trichotillomania which removes hair follicles by physical means. At Noelle Salon, we cover the various approaches to hair solutions to treat hair loss, female pattern baldness, balding spots, and other conditions to which you lose hair. At Noelle Salon, we focus on hair growth techniques. Hair systems and hair extension maintenance is part of the journey while wearing them. For Trichotillomania, as our hair grows they both will loosen, and service is required. The difference between a hair system and hair extensions for Trichotillomania clients varies based on the location of hair loss.
