Embrace Authenticity: Indian Temple Hair Extensions 101

Years ago, before I had boots on the ground to source curly hair extensions in India, I blindly ordered bulk hair from an Indian vendor. When the hair arrived, it had the odor of old meat, was filled with nits (lice eggs), and the hair was not 22 inches, it was much shorter. Indian hair sourcing and production has come a long way since then, and the hair is of superior quality, raw, clean and gently processed. We offer these extensions in a variety of methods such as keratin bonds, bulk hair, and hair wefts. Bulk hair is used to make v-light and CombLine strand extensions, with each piece containing approx. 3.75oz of hair (~105-107grams) for 10in, 12in, and 14in lengths and approx. 4oz of hair (~110 grams) for 16in and above. For added definition and hold, try using a curl defining mousse before applying our French Argan Oil for softness and manageability.

What Temples Source Indian Temple Hair

Today, our curly hair from India is sourced from several temples, where the donors are well compensated. The temples are Trupati, Yadgiri, Gutta, and Simhacalam. The hair is considered raw, and since it comes from one donor, the shades vary from medium brown, dark brown, soft black, and jet black. To achieve lighter shades, I use gentle bleach, and tone with Redken Shades EQ, or Colorance by Goldwell.

What are Raw Hair Extensions

This natural hair is offered in a hair weft, I will often dye the weft with fabric dye such as RIT dye, particularly when I color the hair lighter. This is true virgin hair. In India, Raw virgin hair is carefully washed, no chemicals, and left out in the sun to dry. The sun also helps to promote subtle highlights in the raw hair. The process is natural, and when it is raining, the process is delayed. However, for those looking for a quicker and more convenient option, we also offer wigs and units made from this same high-quality raw hair with added accessibility for natural hair and scalp.

The Difference Between Indian Hair and Asian Hair Extensions

There are no chemicals to curl the hair, it has the curl pattern that the donor had. Raw Indian hair is the gold standard in curly hair, but what you see it what you get. It is difficult to find a very tight curl in raw hair and hair from India. Tight spiral curls are chemically processed by a water wave and are most likely from China. Unfortunately, like a hair perm, the curls loosen rather quickly and can lead to frizz, unless properly cared for with the right shampoo and conditioning routine.

Hair Extension Terminology

In India, we have the option to purchase "man-made" hair, this term does not need artificial, or synthetic hair. Rather it refers to hair that is dyed or bleached to achieve lighter shades. My preference is to customize the color myself, I can control the bleaching level, color, and toning process, and maintain the integrity of the hair.

What is the Curl Pattern of Indian Temple Hair?

Indian temple hair is offered in an array of hair textures, since they derive from one donor, the texture is the exact curl pattern from them. The raw material can be curled, permed, and colored, making it versatile for any desired hairstyle. This is considered the best hair with thick hair at the root, to naturally tapered ends. For those with looser curl patterns, it is recommended to thoroughly rinse the hair to avoid weighing down the curls. However, for kinkier textures, leaving a bit of conditioner in the hair can act as a leave-in conditioner and help retain moisture. Ultimately, the curl pattern of Indian temple hair allows for a variety of styling options, catering to different personal preferences.

Since Indian women have many different curl patterns you can expect straight hair, wavy hair, looser cul patterns, and natural waves.

Can you Color Raw Bundles?

Coloring raw virgin Indian hair is an essential extra step, but one that is worthwhile. If you are a client of our salon, we will expertly match the color for you, and if you are interested in purchasing our hair -- we will teach you the best color practice.

In many cases, darker hair clients will color their own hair to match the hair extensions since they may prefer to wear their hair in a darker shade.

Brazilian Weft Hair Extensions vs. Indian Temple Hair

I can not tell you how important it is to purchase high-quality curly hair, and hair from Indian Temple hair is top-notch. I do have one resource from Brazil, but there are not many women willing to cut their hair. Brazilian woman wears hair extensions, and rarely donate their hair except in outlying areas. A common practice in Brazil is friends growing their hair, and donating it to each other. The hair is not cleaned properly and is not for mass production. However, when it comes to ethical sourcing and supporting the Indian economy, Indian Virgin Hair from temples is the way to go. Additionally, with our commitment to providing a variety of textures and products for everyone, we offer global shipping and our customer care team is always available to ensure you're having a great hair day!

Caring for your lovely hair extensions is paramount to keep them healthy. Firstly, whatever will damage your own hair will cause more damage to hair extensions. Please avoid excessive heat styling, use products that infuse moisture, and gentle shampoo. Do not ruff up the hair, instead, gently diffuse for curls, or use a low-heat setting to blow-dry. Never go to bed with wet hair it is best to thoroughly dry your hair after washing. Avoid alcohol-based products such as hair spray, and use a gentle hair spray.
