Understanding Trichotillomania In Boston

As someone who has worked with hundreds of clients with Trichotillomania, it has become quite common to me, albeit, it does not feel very common to the person who has it.  I refuse to make my clients feel uncomfortable about it, or claim it to be a "disorder!"  People with Trich come from all walks of life, ages, and economic background, and they are just like the rest of us.  The clients work through the condition to lead successful lives and have learned to deal with Trichotillomania.

In most cases, they creatively pull out their hair and may grow their hair long in order to cover the areas of hair loss due to hair pulling.  They often suffer in silence, until they come to the realization that this is part of them, the hair-pulling situation may wax and wane, and coping is important.  It appears to become a habit over time, which can be quite frustrating, but I do not associate the condition with self-harm, it appears to be self-soothing -- like nail biting.

There does come a point where many with hair loss due to Trich will seek help, or decide to address the situation.  This is where our expert stylists come in, we offer a solution to cover the hair loss area while creating a barrier to prevent hair pulling.  A hair topper is a perfect solution to literally put up a STOP sign, and over time the hair under the topper will grow.

A hair topper works especially well to grow back hair located at the top of the head, which is difficult to hide.  There may be instances where the desire to pull intensifies, and pulling may occur in other areas.  In this case, we attach hair extensions, which also help to prevent hair pulling.  I have been told by numerous clients, that they pull "one" hair at a time, and with hair extensions, they will be pulling several hairs at once, the sensation is quite different.  Therefore, hair extensions also help.

The ultimate goal is to stop the pulling behavior, but accepting the situation is also essential to prevent stress.  Taking the initial step to address trich on an aesthetic level is only part of the process, our most successful clients use many treatments from therapy, fidget toys, and meditation!

A note to parents with children with Trich, your child is one of many with this condition, and they need your support.  Children with understanding parents overcome the condition easier than those that go it alone!

Pictured; our lovely client had not worn hair hair down in over ten years, she is a professional woman that leads a happy life.  She and her mother came to our salon where she was fitted with a human hair topper that we affixed with a beaded matrix (no glue, tape, or sewing).  At the end of her appointment, both her and her mother were crying tears of joy!  Diane, her stylist, was also crying tears of joy.  This work is our passion, giving us the utmost gratification.
