Tips For Hair Topper Application
A "hair topper" works perfectly to cover hair loss located at the top-of-the-head, most online stores offer a clip-on variety. The clip-on system uses flexible combs that attached the topper to natural hair. But, what if you desire to wear the hair topper on a daily basis, even at night? We have a system that does not include glue, sewing, or velcro.
Over the years, I have witnessed several ways that hair toppers are attached, I am not a fan of the below techniques because they destroy the existing hair, as well as being very uncomfortable.
1) Glue - A glue-down system will work best on someone that is completely bald, but many of us still have hair, albeit sparse from diffuse alopecia. Maintaining this type of attachment process is quite difficult since the glue hardens, and releases the topper, aka, hair system. Taking off the system is painful, and after several glue downs, the remaining hair may be non-exist.
2) Partial Glue Down - The perimeter of the hair is shaven across the head from temple to temple, and the hair topper is then glued against the shaven/hairless area. The problem of shaving and gluing consistently will damage the hair follicles. Additionally, the client will never be able to go without the hair topper since they will have to wait for the shaven hair to grow back -- which may not happen.
3) Velco Glue Down -- Velcro is taped onto the hair in a variety of areas, the other side of the velcro is taped onto the hair topper, and the topper is attached. This is one of the most uncomfortable attachment processes, the velcro is stiff and pulls on the hair. The velcro offers no flexibility, and when removed pulls out natural hair.
4) Tape Down - A bit of tape used on areas where hair is vacant is not necessarily bad, but the tape should never be attached to natural hair. It is simply not strong enough to support the weight of the hair topper. Tape is not very easy to remove, and will pull out natural hair.
What We Do
Our hair toppers are applied with a matrix of aluminum silicone-lined beads of various sizes. Hair is then threaded through without glue, tape, or shaving. We customize the beads in areas to secure the hair topper without adding undue stress to our client's natural hair.
Our system lasts longer in the hair, approximately 4 weeks, and will never damage our client's own hair. We have had great success with our hair toppers, especially those with Trichotillomania -- a hair-pulling disorder. The topper creates a barrier to prevent hair-pulling behavior. Additionally, some hair loss is temporary, the other above-mentioned systems will destroy the hair.
Hair Toppers are gaining in popularity and are worn by a myriad of celebrity A-listers. You must proceed with caution when opting for a hair system, especially when attached.
The right hair topper for you should mold to your scalp, be flexible, and be the right size to fit your head. Also, hair topper density varies; from 100 percent to 200 percent hair density. It is important that the correct weight and size are selected to suit an individual's own head size, shape, texture, and hair density. This is why it is extremely difficult to purchase a human hair system online.
A hair topper will come in a variety of lengths from 6 inches to 18/20 inches, it is not a wig, therefore it should not be as heavy. The topper is then cut to blend into our clients' hair, as well as a perfect style that suits you!
We only use virgin-quality human hair, synthetic hair can not be customized, and may look unnatural. A synthetic hair topper will keep its style but is preferred for shorter hairstyles. I recommend not attaching synthetic hair since it can not be washed, curled, and styled like human hair.
